What To Do If You’re Feeling Sick
Find information about the COVID-19 virus, how to protect yourself, your family, and your community, and what to do if you suspect you have the virus.
If you are feeling unwell, you can check your symptoms online or download the self-assessment app. These resources are available 24 hours a day. You can also call 8-1-1 to speak to a nurse Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT. For more information, view the BCCDC resources here.
Federal Supports
Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)
If you have stopped working because of COVID-19, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) may provide you with temporary income support. The CERB provides $500 a week for up to 16 weeks.
The benefit will be available to workers:
- Residing in Canada, who are at least 15 years old;
- Who have stopped working because of COVID-19 and have not voluntarily quit their job or are eligible for EI regular or sickness benefits;
- Who had income of at least $5,000 in 2019 or in the 12 months prior to the date of their application.
Provincial Supports
Climate Action Tax Credit
A one-time enhancement to the climate action tax credit will be paid in July 2020 for moderate to low-income families. Adults will receive up to $218.00 (increased from $43.50), while children will receive $64.00 (increased from $12.75).
Renters, Homeowners and People Experiencing Homelessness
Funding for housing supports are increased to ensure people can maintain their housing in the event of job or income loss. A temporary rent supplement will provide up to $500 per month paid directly to landlords. Applications for the supplement will open soon on the BC Housing website.
Other Financial Supports
Other sources of support for people unable to pay monthly bills:
- BC Hydro customers can defer bill payments or arrange for flexible payment plans with no penalty. Customers who are dealing with job loss, illness or loss of wages due to COVID-19 will be able to use BC Hydro’s Customer Crisis Fund grant program for up to $600: https://www.bchydro.com/index.html
- ICBC customers on a monthly payment plan who are facing financial challenges due to COVID-19 may defer their payment for up to 90 days with no penalty.
Mental Health Resources
- Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) provides a frequently updated page of COVID-19 mental health resources.
- The Province of B.C. is offering new, virtual mental health supports during COVID-19, which include low or no-cost access to online coaching, community counselling, and peer support groups. Click here to learn more.
